The Junior School have wasted no time in focussing their competitive sporting edge in 2020. They took home a host of medals at the AJIS Indoor Athletics Competition and also put in a strong performance at the ISA Cross Country event.

A really great day of athletics last Wednesday saw 26 boys and girls from Year 5 and 6 travelling over to Wigan for the AJIS Indoor Athletics Competition.

The children took part in a variety of track and field events with a further 26 schools. Great performances from all resulted in a number of medals. Leo Gerrard, competing in only his second event for the school, gained a silver in the vertical jump. Billy Holland also won a silver in the standing triple jump. Leo Evans won the first of his two medals over the day winning the standing long jump. His second, a bronze came later in the one-lap sprint.

Arul Trippathi jumped to a silver medal in the vertical jump. Amelia Hough won a silver in the speed bounce. Billy and Leo unluckily missed out on a further medal in the parleff relay by only one-tenth of a second. The children were a credit to the school throughout the day. Well done to all who represented The Grange.

Scarisbrick Hall was this year’s destination for the ISA Cross Country. Having walked the course early the children and teachers arrived at the finish wet and muddy before the races actually started.

First up was the Year 4 Girls race. Lily Coates was first to go for the Grange to cross the line in 12th place closely followed by Sam Topping in 15th. Luba Hall, Ava Nicholson and Lily Mullooney completed the course finishing 33rd, 44th and 48th. Isabel Storer and Danni Akhionbare ran well ending up in 54th and 109th, respectively.

Next to go were the boys. Gus Fraser was our first and only qualifier for Nationals crossing the line in 8th. Tristan Shaw finished 11th and is first reserve for the Nationals. Thomas Davies, Will Rands, Aadav Selveskar, Saatvik Elaprolu, Lucas Murray and Daniel Hughes ran a tricky course well.

The Year 5 & 6 teams ran next with Sofia Ravenna-Nino topping the tables for The Grange in 20th, Grace Fairweather 36th, Daisy Caldwell 38th, Saanvi Sathish 45th. Emily Bowman and Emily Keenan both finished the race strongly finishing in the top 100.

The boys’ top performers were Hugo Ffoulkes-Davies and Billy Holland who finished in 59th and 60th. Samuel Woolley, Charlie Salmon, Leo Gerrard, Leo Rogers, Beau Mannering finished in the top 80 with Leo Evans and Alex Nicholson completing the course soon after. Special congratulations go to Gus Fraser who will go onto represent the North at the Nationals later this year.
