In a global society, language is more important than ever. The Languages team at The Grange take great care to tailor lessons to the requirements of individuals so they can become fluent in their chosen language.
Students are encouraged to communicate with each other throughout lessons using role-play, paired conversation, group dialogue/debate and class surveys. Lessons engage students through a variety of multimedia, games, competitions as well as traditional grammar learning, which students equally enjoy.
Our fully equipped Language Laboratory allows students to manage their own learning through a variety of software and through the structure of our lessons. Independent learning in the Laboratory is supported fully by highly trained language specialists.
In the German Department, we pride ourselves on highly communicative learning in lessons. By the end of Key Stage 4, our students are confident and fluent in speaking German. In Year 11, students are further supported every week for one lunchtime to focus solely on preparation for the speaking test element of the GCSE. Students develop their general conversation skills and also focus on preparation for the role-play and photo card.
Every other year there is a six-day summer Germany trip to Boppard on the Rhein. Students have an unforgettable experience, whilst sampling the culture and language of Germany, together. During the week they visit castles, take a trip along the Rhein, shop and swim in Koblenz, Rudersheim and Cochem and also spend an essential day at the Phantasialand Theme Park!
Where appropriate there are opportunities to watch foreign films in Manchester or attend intensive language days held at a variety of universities. The German Department has also formed a strong relationship with a school in Austria and an exchange programme has run successfully for Sixth Form students over the last 10 years.
Studying French at The Grange opens our students’ eyes and ears to a different culture. With experienced, creative teachers and small class sizes, lessons are engaging, interactive and supportive. This learning environment is the foundation for us to achieve excellent academic results.
To fully immerse our students in the French language we organise memorable trips to France visiting places such as Paris and Nice. By living and seeing French culture first hand, it develops our students’ passion for the subject as well giving them the opportunity to put their language skills in action.
The Spanish language is vital for understanding the cultures of Spain, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Hispanics in the United States. Spanish is the second most prevalent native language in the world.
At The Grange School, Spanish offers students a comprehensive education and provides them with a body of knowledge and the analytical skills necessary to undertake linguistics, cultural and literary investigations.
We have a combination of young and experienced qualified teachers who are committed to the teaching the Hispanic language and culture with passion. All of our teachers have studied and lived in a Spanish speaking country. We also offer one-to-one conversational tutorials with our assistant from Colombia.
We offer multiple opportunities for students to expand their bilingual skills in a wide range of contexts, to learn more about Spanish-speaking countries and to broaden their personal cultural experiences.
We have strong links with nearby universities such as Manchester Metropolitan University with whom we follow tailor-made workshops to support students in their language learning and inspire them to pursue Higher Education courses in languages and cultures. Immersion courses are also available in Spain thanks to our famous link with Salamanca University.
We also work with the Instituto Cervantes in Manchester and the Spanish Circle of Liverpool with whom we organise cultural activities to enrich the students' experience.
