The afternoon of Wednesday 22nd June brought great excitement for the whole of the Junior School, as more than seventy students took their places at the ‘stage’ end of the sports hall to perform a concert to the rest of the school community.
The audience expected they were in for a treat as the orchestra opened with a cool rendition of the theme from ‘James Bond’, and they were not to be disappointed! The excitement carried on all afternoon, with super performances from the Jazz Band, several talented soloists, the Brass Ensemble, and more.
The Suzuki Violin Group, led by Miss Boardman, displayed the most impressive span of ages – featuring pupils representing every year group; from Reception up to Year 6! They delighted us with a fabulous piece called ‘Hungarian Hop’. The KS2 choir added some humour and movement to ‘If I Only Had a Brain’ from ‘The Wizard of Oz’, singing a lively version of the song that featured a rhythmic section of clapping and lots of fun actions.
To finish the proceedings, the flute ensemble had prepped a group of teachers to come on stage and join them as backing dancers for their performance of ‘Y.M.C.A’. Any trepidation the volunteers may have felt soon disappeared as they boogied away enthusiastically, to the absolute delight of the audience!
Almost every student I’ve asked since Wednesday has picked the same highlight: the whole school community rocking away to the Year 6 Rock Band’s version of ‘Seven Nation Army’, which went down so well they played it again as an encore at the end – repeating the song over and over until all seven year groups had danced their way out of the hall and along the corridors!
After school the students had a short break before performing the whole programme again to their parents. This time we had several extra solos added in; with recognisable tunes including ‘Harry Potter: Hedwig’s Theme’ on the cornet; an exquisite cello performance of Saint-Saen’s ‘The Swan’ from ‘Carnival of the Animals’; and ‘Spring’ from Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ on oboe.
The variety of styles was fantastic, including everything from Mozart, to tango, to AC/DC! Both our student and parent audiences were wonderfully enthusiastic and supportive. We look forward to playing again soon.
Several children, inspired by their peers, have since expressed an interest in taking up an instrument and/or singing lessons. Parents who would like to find out more, or apply for their child to take up lessons, should complete the enquiry form on Firefly; in Resources> Junior Parents> Junior Music Tuition.
Well done to everyone involved!
