November saw the return of ‘Food Experts at The Grange’ with a fiery presentation from the award-winning ‘The Little Chilli Shop’, from Anglesey.

Students were guided around the mysterious world of all things chilli by Tim and Suzanne Silcock, alias The Chilli Man and Chilli Sue. It is no wonder they are the go-to for any chilli story by the BBC and have had their successful seaside town shop featured in Cheshire Life. Students were able to get up close and personal with chilli plants, chilli sauces and relishes as well as hear fabulous stories of record-breaking chillis. The facts about the mutated chillis that have travelled to space were particularly awe-inspiring and offered students great cross-curricular learning as these seeds grow to extraordinary lengths in a wild twisted fashion.

We were delighted to welcome Weaverham High School and Rudheath Senior Academy too and are thrilled that they are keen to hear what our next, ‘Food Experts at The Grange’ event will be.

Over 60 students from The Grange came in to sample the worlds hottest chillis, stay for the whole presentation or just drop in to see what all the excitement was about which was really encouraging to see. It prompted the thought that next year we may even host a 'Chilli Challenge' with our neighbouring schools and ask The Little Chilli Shop back.

The Food and Nutrition Department would like to thank the fantastic staff in the Grange Theatre who made the event possible and to give a big thank you to Mr Grisedale, Head of Physics, who was a tremendous sport being the first to take on the chilli challenge culminating in the Carolina Reaper... Which he and all the participating students found a little hot! Good for them we say for immersing themselves in food.
