The Grange School took part in World Book Day with a series of exciting literary-themed activities.

At the Senior School, the literature-inspired costumes were very impressive, with book tokens awarded to Toby L as The Phantom of the Opera and Finn F as an Oompa Loompa. There were chocolates for Sophie H, Ingrid E, Lilia B and Kayla C for their take on the Wizard of Oz. The staff costume prizes were awarded to Mrs Dunn as the Caterpillar and Dr Rigby as Winnie the Witch and a special prize went to a number of staff who jointly came along as all the characters of Alice in Wonderland.

During the World Book Day assemblies, we were inspired by staff and students’ contributions to Miss Stockton’s ‘Reading in Unusual Places’ photography competition. The winners were Jessica B, Imogen B, Anya M and Jemima R, all of whom will receive book tokens. Meanwhile, Mrs Sanders’ form-time quiz challenged students’ knowledge of famous young adult fiction.

The winner of Ms Hughes’ ‘Book in a Box’ competition was Helena M for her hard-hitting diorama of William Golding’s novel ‘Lord of the Flies’.

Mr Jantzen joined students in a literary scavenger hunt, whilst Mrs Turpin and Mr Kelly were equally busy, hiding donated books in locations around the school site.

Earlier in the week, Mr Neilson and the English Department arranged for Paul Dowswell, award-winning author, to come into school. Paul delivered creative writing workshops to Year 8 English classes, in addition to hosting a ‘Q&A’ (with cake!) at lunchtime. The students asked Paul some probing questions about how to become a successful writer and from whence Paul gets his inspiration.

The Junior School had also planned a whole range of exciting book-themed activities including dressing up for the day as a book character, with a particular emphasis on recycling and reusing items that children already have. All year groups participated in the Drop Everything and Read challenge - when a bell was rang in the corridor, all classes had to stop whatever they were doing and pick up a book to read.

There was also the annual Book Swap, Book Day assembly and a special story time with Deputy Head Mr Tagg at the end of the school day.
