“There was a wild crashing sound, a ripping of metal, and the plane blew through the trees, out over the water and down, down to slam into the lake…”
First published in 1987, Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is a classic of its kind. When the two-seater airplane that was carrying Brian Robeson crash-lands in the middle of the Canadian wilderness, he must find a way to survive against all the odds with nothing but his wits and a hatchet to help him do so. It took me a few chapters to really warm to this book but by the end I was absolutely hooked, compulsively turning the pages to see how Brian would overcome his next challenge and fascinated by his journey of self-discovery. A brilliant book that suggests we are all probably stronger then we think.
A great read for anyone with an interest in the outdoors (it should be required reading for anyone doing D of E!) or anyone who just loves a good adventure story. I would recommend for young people aged 11 and upwards.
