I studied at The Grange from 1997-2010 and am now a professional singer working in London. It’s a career I’ve always wanted to go into and the school was always so supportive and encouraging.
The majority of my job now is currently spent as the bass of the cappella quintet Apollo5 – the group sings a range of musical styles from jazz and pop to classical and folk and our schedule incorporates concerts, recording, and education projects across the UK and abroad. Alongside work with Apollo5, I also work as a freelance performer and workshop leader on projects from choral music to opera and music theatre.
A lot of my early experiences in this field come from singing at The Grange, and I loved performing in plays, musicals, and with the school choir. For me, these experiences inspired me to pursue a career in the performing arts and I will always have the fondest of memories of The Grange and the support the school and staff gave me. The Music and Drama staff were particularly great and the department often felt like a second home!
If I would give any advice, I’d always say to go into a career that you’re really passionate about and be as proactive as you can– make the most of any opportunities on offer and be a “yes” person. Maintaining a positive outlook has been key for me and is particularly important within the performing arts sector which can be uncertain at times.
The most rewarding things have come from decisions I’ve been initially a little uncertain of– throw yourself in at the deep end and take yourself out of your comfort zone. Always keep learning and adding to your skill set. Oh, and always been kind to everyone – that one’s a biggie and is so important but rarely acknowledged!
